Adjustable bed: king vs split king

This decision has exactly one input: does anyone else sleep in the bed. If yes, and if you want different positions, buy a split king. If not, do not — you would be paying for a second motor, a second mattress and a permanent seam down the middle of your bed for no benefit at all.

What a split king actually is

A standard king is 76 inches wide by 80 long. A twin XL is 38 by 80. Two twin XLs side by side make a king, which is why the split configuration works dimensionally without changing the footprint of the bed. Each half is a complete adjustable base with its own motor.

The last two rows are the ones people are pleased about later. A king base is genuinely difficult to carry up a staircase; two twin XL halves are not. And a failure that takes out half a bed is much less disruptive than one that takes out all of it.

The gap, and what to do about it

Two mattresses meeting in the middle leave a trench. It is usually small, and it is exactly where a couple would otherwise lie together. This is the most common complaint about split kings and it has a cheap fix.

A bridge that is narrower than your gap does nothing, and one with no anchoring will migrate down the bed overnight — which is worse than no bridge, because you stop trusting it. Sheets are the other hidden cost

A split king needs two twin XL fitted sheets and, if you want the bed to look like one bed, a king flat sheet or comforter over the top. Fitted sheets on any adjustable base have a habit of letting go at the corners when the mattress bends, which is annoying on a king and twice as annoying on a split.
