Ask the internet how high a bed should be for an older adult and you will be told 20 to 23 inches, in almost identical words, on almost every page. Nobody says where the number came from, and nobody mentions that it cannot possibly be right for everyone — a person who is five foot one and a person who is six foot three do not have the same legs.

The correct target is your own lower-leg length: the distance from the floor to the back of your knee when you sit with both feet flat. Set the top of the mattress at roughly that height and, sitting on the edge, your feet reach the floor with your knees at about a right angle. That is the position from which a person can actually stand up. It is also the position from which they can sit down without dropping the last few inches.

That is the whole method. It is arithmetic, it takes five minutes, and it is the single most useful thing on this site. The calculator and the full explanation are here.

Why height beats almost every other intervention

The CDC reports that around one in four adults aged 65 and over falls each year, that falling once roughly doubles the odds of falling again, and that about 37% of those who fall report an injury that needed treatment or restricted activity for at least a day. Bed transfers are routine and repeated, with nobody watching — several times a day, often at night, often half asleep.

Getting the height right does not require a purchase at all in some cases, and where it does, the purchase is usually a set of risers rather than a base. Compare that with the rest of this subject and it is not close.

Too high is a real problem too

This section is not simply about raising beds. A bed that is too high is worse than one slightly too low: getting in becomes a climb, and getting out becomes a drop onto feet that are not yet under you. Perching on the edge with your toes just touching the floor is exactly the posture from which people slide.

Two situations produce a too-high bed almost by accident. A thick modern mattress — 12 inches is now normal, where 8 was once standard — on an older frame designed for a thinner one. And a mattress topper added for comfort, which adds its full thickness to the surface height without anyone thinking of it as a height decision.

    Risers vs Leg Extensions

One sits under the leg, one becomes the leg. The difference matters more on an adjustable base than on a normal frame.

    Floor Beds and Fall Risk

Lowering a bed shortens the fall and makes standing up harder. Both halves of that are true, and the choice is real.

Questions people actually ask

What is the best bed height for seniors?

Your own lower-leg length — floor to the back of the knee, sitting with feet flat — measured to the top of the mattress. For most adults that lands somewhere between 20 and 23 inches, which is where the commonly quoted range comes from, but the range is a summary of other people's legs and yours are the ones that matter.

How do I raise my bed for an elderly person?

Bed risers under the legs are the cheapest and most reversible option, typically 3 to 8 inches, and the cheapest intervention in this whole subject. Leg extensions replace or extend the frame's own legs and are sturdier but frame-specific. The comparison is here.

Is a higher bed safer for seniors?

Only up to a point. Too high is its own hazard: getting in becomes a climb and getting out becomes a drop. Aim for the measured target rather than for as high as possible.

Do bed risers make a bed unstable?

Good ones do not. What makes a riser unstable is stacking, a small base, or a shallow socket the leg does not sit properly inside. Load rating and base size are the specs to compare — our riser comparison scores both.

Does a mattress topper change bed height?

Yes, by its full thickness. A 3-inch topper raises the sleep surface by 3 inches, and that is often enough to move a correct bed into being too high. Measure again after adding one.
