Almost every mattress comparison ranks by how the mattress feels. We cannot do that honestly — nobody here has slept on any of these — so we rank on what the manufacturers publish, and we say what each figure is worth.
That produces a shorter, less confident list than most sites offer. It is also a list you can audit line by line.

How we scored them
- Height and stack planning. Does the listing publish the mattress height, and the full dimensions? This is first because mattress thickness is most of what decides your sleep-surface height, which is what decides whether you can stand up from the bed.
- Base compatibility. All-foam construction flexes on an adjustable base. An explicit adjustable-base rating scores higher than an inference from construction — and, notably, none of these publish one.
- Firmness disclosure. A stated firmness scores seven, because it is a manufacturer's word rather than a measurement. Nothing here can score higher, since no consumer mattress publishes a measured indentation figure.
- Certification. CertiPUR-US, a fiberglass-free statement, or both.

Why the topper is on this list
Because for a lot of people it is the right purchase and a new mattress is not. If the mattress is structurally fine but the surface is too firm, a topper changes the surface for a fraction of the price. If the mattress sags in the middle, a topper will not save it and a new one is genuinely needed. The full comparison.
One caution that belongs on every page in this section: a 3-inch topper raises your sleep surface by 3 inches. That is often enough to move a correctly-heighted bed into being too high. Re-measure afterwards.
What we could not tell you
- How any of them feel. We have not slept on them and will not imply otherwise.
- How long they last. No manufacturer publishes a durability figure and warranty terms vary by seller and date.
- How firm they really are. Firmness labels are not comparable between manufacturers and none of these publish a measured figure.
- Their edge support. This matters a great deal for getting out of bed and no listing addresses it — why it matters.
Questions people actually ask
What is the best mattress for an elderly person?
The one whose published height puts your sleep surface at your lower-leg measurement, that flexes if you have or want an adjustable base, and whose edge does not collapse when you sit on it. Comfort beyond that is personal and untestable from a website.
How thick should a mattress be for a senior?
It is a height calculation, not a comfort one. Your target sleep-surface height minus your frame height equals the mattress thickness you need. The calculator.
Are memory foam mattresses good for seniors?
They flex on an adjustable base, which rigid innersprings often do not, and they distribute pressure. They also make rolling over marginally harder for some people, which is a real trade-off that rarely appears in a listing.
What does CertiPUR-US mean?
A foam certification covering content and emissions — no ozone depleters, no specified flame retardants, low VOCs. It says nothing about durability or comfort. Worth having, not a quality score.
