A mattress is not just a comfort decision on this site. It is a height decision — mattress thickness is usually more than half the distance from the floor to where you sit — and, if you own an adjustable base, a compatibility decision, because not every mattress bends.
Those two facts are why this section exists at all. Every other page here is about frames, rails and heights; this one is about the layer between them and you.
The three things that catch people out
1. Not every mattress works on a base
All-foam mattresses flex readily. Most modern hybrids do. Traditional innersprings with a rigid perimeter often do not, and anything with a wooden or steel insert will not bend at all — trying will damage the mattress, the base, or both. How to check yours before the base arrives.
2. Mattress thickness is a height decision
Twelve inches is a normal mattress today. Eight was normal a generation ago. If a bed that suited someone for twenty years suddenly feels too high to get out of, the mattress replaced last year is usually the reason. Every mattress we track publishes its height, and we put that number in the ledger's key-spec column for exactly this reason. The height arithmetic.
3. Ordinary sheets come off an adjustable bed
A bending mattress stretches a fitted sheet across a curve it was not cut for, and the corners let go. The fix is a deep pocket and a genuine anchoring design, not a higher thread count. The sheets we would buy.
What we score, and what we refuse to
We score mattresses on four things: published height, base compatibility, how honestly firmness is disclosed, and certification. We do not rank them by feel, because nobody here has slept on them and because firmness labels are not standardized — one manufacturer's medium firm is another's medium, and there is no scale behind either word.
The pages in this section
- Mattresses for seniors — scored on published height, flex and certification.
- Sheets for adjustable beds — pocket depth and anchoring, not thread count.
- Mattress toppers — the cheap way to change the surface, and the height cost.
- Mattress versus topper — when replacing beats adding.
- Adjustable base compatibility — how to test what you own before you buy a base.
- Firmness and edge support — why the edge matters more than the middle here.

Best Sheets
Scored on published pocket depth and anchoring design, because thread count has nothing to do with why your sheet keeps coming off.

Best Toppers
The cheap way to change how a mattress feels. It also raises the bed by its full thickness, which almost nobody plans for.

Head to head
Mattress vs Topper
One changes the surface, one changes the support. Three tests tell you which problem you actually have.

Base Compatibility
No, and the two-minute test to find out about the one you own — before the base is in the room.
Guide
Firmness and Edge Support
Firmness labels are marketing. Edge support is the specification that decides whether you can get up, and nobody publishes it.
Questions people actually ask
What mattress is best for an adjustable bed?
An all-foam or flexible hybrid mattress. Rigid innersprings and anything with a wood or steel insert will not bend. Beyond that, the deciding factors are published height — because that sets how high your bed sits — and edge support.
How thick should a mattress be for a senior?
Whatever makes the total sleep-surface height match your lower-leg measurement. Thickness is not a comfort spec on this site, it is a height spec. Run the arithmetic and the answer falls out.
Do I need special sheets for an adjustable bed?
Deep-pocket sheets with a genuine anchoring design, yes. A standard fitted sheet will come off the corners once the mattress starts bending. The sheets compared.
Is a firm or soft mattress better for seniors?
There is no consensus and firmness labels are not standardized, so we do not rank by feel. What matters measurably here is edge support: a mattress that collapses where you sit makes getting up harder regardless of how it feels in the middle.
What does fiberglass-free mean on a mattress?
Every mattress sold in the US must meet a federal open-flame flammability standard. Some manufacturers achieve it with a fiberglass fire barrier inside the cover. Fiberglass-free means they used something else — which matters if the cover is ever removed for washing.
