Adjustable bed sizes and dimensions
The size chart in inches, the sizes these fourteen bases are actually sold in, and the three room measurements people only take after delivery goes wrong.
By Stephen V.Published How we pick
The verdict first: an adjustable base is the same footprint as the mattress that goes on it, so the size decision is the mattress decision — and for most households shopping around getting in and out of bed, that means a queen at 60 by 80 inches, with the Amada 01B-Q1 queen as the base to start from. The dimension that actually goes wrong is not width or length. It is height, and not one base in this category publishes it.
Below: the standard sizes in inches, the sizes the fourteen bases in our registry are really sold in, and the three measurements of your own room that decide whether the bed you have chosen will work when it arrives.
Standard US sizes, in inches
| Size | Width x length (in) | Notes for an adjustable base |
|---|---|---|
| Twin | 38 x 75 | Short by five inches against almost everything else |
| Twin XL | 38 x 80 | The single-sleeper size, and each half of a split king |
| Full | 54 x 75 | Rare in this category - one of fourteen bases we track |
| Queen | 60 x 80 | The most common size here - four of fourteen bases |
| King | 76 x 80 | One deck, one handset, both sleepers share the angle |
| Split king | 76 x 80 (two at 38 x 80) | Two decks that move independently |
| California king | 72 x 84 | Narrower and longer; not offered by any base we track |
Which sizes these bases are actually sold in
A size chart tells you what exists. It does not tell you what you can buy, and in this category the answer is narrower than the chart. Across the fourteen adjustable bases in our registry the size split is: six split kings, four queens, two kings, one twin XL and one full. Nothing in California king, and nothing in standard twin.
| Size listed | Bases we track | What that means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Split king | 6 | The best-supplied size here, and the only one with independent halves |
| Queen | 4 | The safest single-deck choice, with the widest spread of features |
| King | 2 | One deck across 76 inches; both sleepers get the same angle |
| Twin XL | 1 | The smallest footprint, and the only dedicated single base |
| Full | 1 | The Serta baselogic, which we mark skip - head lift only |
| California king | 0 | Not offered by any base we track |
The three measurements of your room
- The getting-out side. Measure the clear floor from the mattress edge to the nearest obstruction on every side anyone gets out from. Two feet is a reasonable minimum for a person on their feet; a walker or a wheelchair transfer wants considerably more. Bed height for a wheelchair transfer.
- The head-of-bed gap. An adjustable base folds upward, and the top of the deck travels backwards slightly as it rises. If the head of the bed is tight against the wall, a raised head either scuffs the plaster or pushes the frame forward. Leave a couple of inches, and check your headboard separately - headboards and adjustable beds.
- The delivery route. These bases arrive in heavy cartons and most of them ship folded, but the carton still has to turn your stair. Measure the narrowest point of the route, not the bedroom door, and compare it to the carton dimensions on the listing rather than to the bed size. What delivery day actually looks like.
One base per size, if you want a shortlist
Three bases, one per size that is genuinely well supplied here. Each is the base we would buy first in its size, and each is covered in full elsewhere on the site.

1 · Best queen
Amada 01B-Q1 Queen Adjustable Bed Frame

The queen that publishes its leg heights as actual inches — four of them — with an under-frame light alongside, which is the combination that matters if getting out is the problem.
- Leg heights
- 8-13 in
- Our spec score
- 9.0/10
- Best for
- Getting the height right
What works
- Four leg heights published as measurements, not a count, so the sleep surface can be planned to your legs before delivery
- An LED night light under the frame, which is the difference between a lit path to the bathroom and feeling for the wall
- A published 750 lb capacity, and a USB-A and a USB-C on each side so the phone, the hearing aid charger and the lamp do not fight over one outlet
What doesn’t
- The listing publishes the leg heights but never the depth of the deck on top of them, so the finished sleep surface is still an estimate until it arrives
- The zero-gravity preset is named but the angles it drives to are not, so what the button actually does is unknown until you press it
- Queen only in this listing, so a split configuration is not an option here

2 · Best split king
Amada Split King Adjustable Bed Frame with Massage and Zero Gravity

The only split king here that gives its leg heights as actual measurements, which is the one specification that decides whether you can stand up from the edge of the bed.
- Leg heights
- 8, 10, 11 or 13 in
- Our spec score
- 9.2/10
- Best for
- Setting the height
What works
- Four leg heights published as real measurements — 8, 10, 11 or 13 inches — so the entry height can be worked out before delivery instead of after
- A published 750 lb rating, an under-bed nightlight, and both a USB-A and a USB-C socket on each side
- Tool-free three-step setup, which counts on a bed that arrives as two separate boxes
What doesn’t
- The deck sits on top of the legs and the listing never says by how much, so the leg figures get you close to the finished sleep height but not exactly to it
- No warranty term and no motor-noise figure published anywhere on the listing
- We would read the massage as a novelty rather than a reason to buy, and it is part of what this base charges for

3 · Best single
Pipishell Twin XL Adjustable Bed Frame with Massage

Four published leg heights on a twin XL, which is the size most single sleepers and most split-king halves actually need — with a zero-gravity preset and a described massage unit alongside them.
- Leg heights
- 8-13 in
- Our spec score
- 7.4/10
- Best for
- A single sleeper
As of October 16, 2026. #ad How we’re funded
What works
- Four published leg heights, stated as a range in inches, so the finished height is a decision rather than a surprise
- USB-C as well as USB-A on each side, which matters more every year as older chargers stop being replaceable
- A published tool-free three-step assembly, and a massage unit described in modes and intensity levels rather than a bare yes
What doesn’t
- The only remote this listing describes is a wired one, and it names it in a shared product description rather than in this size's own bullets — a cord to the floor is what a night-time bedside least needs
- Still no published weight capacity — the one figure the rest of this set does print
- Twin XL is 38 inches wide — fine alone, not a shared bed

Queen - Amada 01B-Q1, 60 by 80 inches. The queen we would buy, because it is one of the six bases that publishes leg heights as inches rather than as a count: 8, 10, 11 and 13, built from 2, 3 and 8-inch sections. A nightlight, USB-A and USB-C per side, the standard published 750 lb. No warranty term and no noise figure published.
Split king - Amada split king, two halves at 37.4 by 79.3 inches. The one base in the registry that publishes its own measured footprint, and the only split king publishing its leg heights in inches. Two independent decks, massage at three intensities, USB on both sides. If two people share the bed and only one of them wants the head up, this is the configuration to buy. All six split kings.
Twin XL - Pipishell, 38 by 80 inches. The smallest footprint here and the only dedicated single base, with four published leg heights from 8 to 13 inches and a described massage unit. Two honest limits: the handset is wired, and the listing publishes no weight capacity at all. The full review.
The dimension nobody publishes
Width and length are solved problems: they come off the standard chart and they are almost never the reason a bed does not work. The height of the finished sleep surface is the reason, and no base in this category publishes it. The deck depth above the legs is unpublished on all fourteen, so even the six bases that give you leg heights leave you to add the mattress and measure the result.
That is not a hard sum, and it is worth doing before you order rather than after. Leg height plus deck depth plus mattress thickness equals the surface you have to get off, and the target is a surface where your feet are flat on the floor and your knees sit level with or just below your hips. Work out your own number first, then measure what you have now, and treat the mattress as part of the furniture rather than as bedding - mattress thickness on an adjustable base.
The standard dimensions on this page are quoted from the Better Sleep Council reference named above. The size each base is sold in, and the one measured footprint, were read from the live Amazon listing of each base on the date stamped in that product's own specification table. Nothing here is estimated, and the sizes nobody sells are reported as absences rather than left out. How we pick.
Questions people actually ask
What size is an adjustable bed?
The same size as the mattress that goes on it. An adjustable base is built to standard US mattress dimensions: twin 38 by 75 inches, twin XL 38 by 80, full 54 by 75, queen 60 by 80, king 76 by 80, California king 72 by 84, and a split king is two twin XL bases side by side at 76 by 80 in total. Buying a base does not change the footprint of your bed.
How long is an adjustable bed?
Eighty inches for a twin XL, queen, king or split king; 75 inches for a twin or a full; 84 inches for a California king. Length is the dimension people forget when they move from a full or a standard twin, because both are 75 inches and almost everything else is 80 — five extra inches at the foot of the bed that have to come from somewhere in the room.
Is a split king the same size as a king?
Yes, exactly. Two twin XL bases are 38 by 80 inches each, so side by side they measure 76 by 80 — the same footprint as a king. The difference is in the middle, not at the edges: two decks that move independently, a seam down the centre and bedding bought in two parts. King versus split king, with the arithmetic.
Do adjustable bases publish their own dimensions?
Almost never. Of the fourteen bases we track, exactly one publishes its deck footprint in inches — the Amada split king, at 37.4 by 79.3 inches per half. Every other listing names a size word and leaves you to assume the standard figure. The assumption is usually right, but if your bedroom is tight you should ask the seller for the measured footprint before you order.
How much room do I need around an adjustable bed?
Plan on at least two feet of clear floor on any side someone gets in or out from, and more if a walker or a wheelchair is involved. Then check the two things that catch people out: the diagonal of the carton against your doorway and stair turn, and whether the head of the bed can stand away from the wall far enough that a raised head does not push the frame into the skirting. Delivery and assembly, step by step.
What size adjustable bed fits a small bedroom?
A twin XL at 38 by 80 inches is the smallest footprint in the set, and it is also the size each half of a split king uses, so it is well supported. A full at 54 by 75 is the short option, and it is the one to check twice: only one of the fourteen bases we track is sold as a full, and it is the base we mark skip.
