Most people arrive at adjustable beds through a condition rather than through an interest in furniture. Reflux that wakes them at two in the morning. A back that objects to lying flat. Ankles that swell. Hands that will not grip a mattress edge hard enough to pull against.

This section is organized around those problems. Every page follows the same shape: what the position actually does, the cheap thing to try first, and only then the products. That order is deliberate — if a cheap wedge pillow answers the question, we would rather you bought the wedge.

What a position can and cannot do

The main positions, what they change, and the cheap way to test each
PositionWhat it changesCheapest test
Head raisedKeeps the upper body above the stomach; eases some breathing and refluxA wedge pillow — the cheapest test there is
Feet raisedElevation for swollen legs and anklesPillows under the calves, free
Knees raised slightly, head slightly raisedTakes some load off the lower back — the zero-gravity positionA pillow under the knees, free
Near-vertical head, brieflyMakes getting out of bed a two-stage movement instead of one hard oneNothing — this is a technique
Higher bed surfaceWhether you can stand up unaided at allMeasure your legs, then a set of risers

The last row is on this table on purpose. A large share of the people who search for an adjustable bed because of arthritis or back pain are describing a height problem in the language of a condition. Getting up from a bed that is too low hurts more if your knees hurt — but the fix is the bed's height, not its angle. That is the cheapest page on this site.

Where the 30-degree figure comes from

You will see 30 degrees quoted constantly in this subject, usually without a source. It comes from Medicare's coverage criteria for hospital beds: coverage determination L33820 lists, among its criteria, a beneficiary who requires the head of the bed elevated more than 30 degrees most of the time due to congestive heart failure, chronic pulmonary disease, or problems with aspiration.

That is a coverage threshold for equipment, not a clinical recommendation for everybody with heartburn. It is worth knowing because it explains where the number in every article came from, and because it matters if you are pursuing coverage — our Medicare page covers that in full.

    Elevation Angles

Thirty degrees is not a wedge height and a wedge height is not an angle. Here is the arithmetic that connects them.

    Wedge vs Adjustable Bed

One costs a fraction of the other. The cheap one wins more often than a site funded by product links is supposed to say.

Questions people actually ask

What is the best adjustable bed position for back pain?

Many people find that a slight knee raise with a slight head raise — the position marketed as zero gravity — reduces lower back load. You can test it tonight with a pillow under your knees before spending anything. More here.

How high should the bed be raised for acid reflux?

Medicare's coverage criteria for hospital beds reference elevation of more than 30 degrees for certain conditions, which is where the widely-quoted figure comes from. What matters practically is that the whole upper body is raised rather than just the head and neck. Angles explained.

Do adjustable beds help arthritis?

Indirectly. The position may make lying more comfortable, but for most people with arthritis the bigger wins are a bed at the right height and something to grip while standing. Arthritis setup.

Is a wedge pillow as good as an adjustable bed?

For testing whether elevation helps, it is better — it costs a fraction and answers the question in a week. For living with elevation every night, a base holds the angle without sliding and is adjustable. The comparison.

Can an adjustable bed help with sleep apnea?

A small head raise can reduce snoring for some people, which is why bases advertise an anti-snore preset. Sleep apnea is a medical diagnosis with medical treatments, and a bed position is not one of them. If apnea is suspected, that is a clinician conversation.
