The best ways to raise a bed under $50
Changing the height of a bed is the cheapest useful thing you can do to it. Four products under $50, two that stack under the legs and two that replace them.

The verdict first. Buy the Home-it adjustable risers: a pack of four, stackable to 3, 5 or 8 inches, with a published 1,300 lb load rating, in polypropylene. They are the cheapest product on this page and the cheapest useful thing on this site, and the three settings are the whole point - you get to find out which height works before you commit to it. That makes them the budget pick as well as the top pick, which is unusual and worth saying plainly. If you already know the height you need and want it to look like part of the bed, the BENBUOO 4-inch replacement legs are the pick under $50.
Here is the case for starting here rather than with a bed. The measurement that decides whether somebody can get out of bed unaided is the height of the top of the mattress off the floor. Not the motor, not the firmness, not the preset list - the height. And the height is the one thing you can change for twenty dollars with no tools and no delivery appointment.
The two approaches
| Stackable risers | Replacement legs | |
|---|---|---|
| How it fits | The existing leg sits in a cup | The existing leg comes off and this goes on |
| Lift published | 3, 5 or 8 in, chosen by stacking | A fixed height, or a telescoping range |
| Adjustable later | Yes, in a minute, with no tools | No, unless the set telescopes |
| Load rating published | Both sets here publish 1,300 lb | Neither set here publishes one |
| How it looks | Four cups under the bed | Like part of the frame |
| Needs the right fitting | No - it is a cup | Yes - check the thread or plate on your frame |
The load-rating row is the one that surprises people and it is the reason the risers rank above the legs here. A riser is a plastic cup and both of the sets on this page publish a figure for it. A replacement leg is a structural part of the bed and only one leg set in our entire registry publishes a load rating at all. We score what is published, so silence costs the legs points - and it should.
How we ranked these four
- Published lift, and how many settings. Several heights from one purchase is the top band, because the right height is a measurement you take rather than a number you know in advance.
- Published load rating. A bed, a mattress and the people in it, resting on four points. A number on the listing is the minimum.
- What meets the floor. The base footprint and material decide whether the thing sinks into carpet, slides on tile or scratches a wood floor. Most listings in this category say nothing about it.
- Fit and fitting. For risers: does the cup hold a caster as well as a leg. For legs: what thread or plate it needs, which is the detail that gets a return.
Each criterion is scored out of ten against published bands, averaged unweighted, with an unpublished specification scoring a neutral five rather than being guessed at. The full rubric.

What the four listings publish
| Product | Type | Lift published | Load rating | Pack |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Home-it risers | Stackable riser | 3, 5 or 8 in | 1,300 lb | 4 |
| MYMULIKE 8-inch risers | Riser | 8 in | 1,300 lb | 4 |
| BENBUOO 4-inch legs | Replacement leg | 4 in | Not published | Set |
| SKUEHOD 9-inch legs | Replacement leg | 9 in | Not published | Set |
Two things worth noticing. Both riser sets publish the same 1,300 lb figure - as with the 750 lb convention on adjustable bases, a number published identically across a category tells you about the category rather than about either product. And neither replacement leg set publishes a load rating, which means the choice between them comes down to the lift and what is stated about the foot that meets the floor.

What to check before you order
- Casters. If the bed is on wheels, a riser cup that fits a square leg may not hold a caster, and a bed on a caster in a cup can roll out of it. Take the casters off or buy a riser that states it holds them.
- The number of legs. A pack of four is for a frame with four legs. Plenty of queen and king frames have five, six or nine - the frames we track publish counts up to nine - and a centre leg left unsupported while the corners go up is how a frame bends.
- The floor. On carpet, the footprint matters more than the lift. On a hard floor, so does what the base is made of. The carpet page.
- Whether you also need a rail. Raising a bed makes getting out easier and makes the fall further. If somebody is unsteady, the height change and a handhold belong in the same order. The rails under $100.
What $50 cannot do
Lower a bed. Everything on this page raises one, and plenty of readers have the opposite problem - a bed too high to reach the floor from, usually a thick mattress on a tall frame. That needs a lower frame or a thinner mattress, not a cheaper accessory. Lowering a bed for seniors, and the low-profile frames we track.
Make the bed move. If the problem is getting from flat to sitting rather than from sitting to standing, height does not touch it and a base or a bed ladder strap does. The alternatives to an adjustable bed.
Fix a sagging frame. Risers under a frame that already bends in the middle raise the bend. If the mattress dips where somebody sleeps, the frame or the slats are the purchase. The heavy-duty frames.
Every specification on this page was read from a live Amazon listing on the date stamped in each product's own table, and scored against the rubric we publish. We have not fitted or tested any of these. The height guidance follows the CDC falls materials and the AAOS patient guidance named above rather than our opinion. Prices are read live and carry their own date; no price is written into the prose on this page. Where a listing publishes nothing - the load rating on both leg sets, the base material on three of four - this page says so. How we pick.
Questions people actually ask
What is the cheapest way to raise a bed?
A set of stackable risers that sit under the existing legs, which on this page means under twenty dollars for a pack of four with a published 1,300 lb rating and three settings - 3, 5 or 8 inches. It is cheap enough to buy as an experiment, which is the real argument for it: you can find out whether 5 inches is the right answer before committing to anything permanent.
Risers or replacement legs - which should I buy?
Risers if you want to try a height, replacement legs if you already know it. Risers stack under what is already there, cost less, and can be removed in a minute; they also add a joint between the leg and the floor, and a bed on risers is a bed standing on four plastic cups. Replacement legs become part of the frame, look like they belong, and cannot be adjusted afterwards unless the set is a telescoping one. The full comparison.
How much weight can bed risers take?
The two riser sets here publish 1,300 lb across a pack of four. The replacement legs are the opposite story: only one leg set in our whole registry publishes a load rating at all, and neither of the two on this page does. That is the category's blank, not ours - and it is a strange one, because a leg is a more structural part than a riser. Bed riser weight limits, in full.
Will risers work on carpet?
The ones with a wide base do, and the ones with a narrow one sink and then lean. Carpet is a different problem from a hard floor and it has its own page, because the footprint and the base material matter more than the lift height once the floor is soft. The risers that work on carpet.
How high should I raise the bed?
Until the feet are flat on the floor with the knees level with or just below the hips when sitting on the edge of the bed. That is a measurement, not a number to look up - it depends on the person's leg length, not their height - and it is why a stackable riser with three settings is the sensible first purchase. Measure it properly here, and the calculator is on the main height page.
Can you put risers under an adjustable bed?
Sometimes, and carefully. An adjustable base sits on its own legs and those legs are load paths for a moving deck, so putting cups under them changes how the whole thing is braced - and several base listings state leg requirements explicitly. The safer route with a base is to use the base's own leg-height settings where it publishes them, or a dedicated replacement leg set. Raising an adjustable bed.
