Here is the sentence that decides this page. If you are worried about rolling out of bed, you want a rail. If you are worried about standing up, you want a handle. Far more people arrive searching for the first and need the second.
A handle is a short grab bar at the side of the bed, positioned where your hand naturally falls when you are sitting on the edge. You pull against it to stand. It is smaller, cheaper and easier to fit than a full-length rail, and it carries none of the entrapment risk that comes with something running the length of the mattress.

Position it before you fix it
Sit on the edge of the bed the way you actually do, feet flat. Reach for where you would like the handle to be. That position is usually further forward and lower than people first fit them — the useful moment is the push at the start of standing, not the steadying at the end.
And check the height of the bed while you are sitting there. If your feet do not sit flat on the floor with your knees at roughly a right angle, the handle is compensating for a bed that is the wrong height, and that is a cheaper and better thing to fix.
Questions people actually ask
What is a bed assist handle?
A short vertical or U-shaped grab bar that fits at the side of the bed, near where you sit. It gives you something to pull against while sitting up and standing. It is not designed to stop anyone rolling out of bed.
Are bed assist handles covered by the bed rail regulation?
Yes. The CPSC's definition of an adult portable bed rail in 16 CFR part 1270 explicitly includes a grab bar, assistive bar, transfer aid, cane or rail intended to be installed on, against or adjacent to an adult bed. A handle is regulated even though it does not look like a rail.
Do assist handles work on an adjustable bed?
It depends on how they mount. Anything clamped under the mattress can foul the hinge when the deck bends. See rails for adjustable beds.
Will an assist handle help someone with arthritis?
Often, and grip design is what decides it. A padded grip and more than one grip height are worth more than a stronger tube — arthritic hands do not hold a bare steel bar well under load. Our arthritis page covers the whole setup, not just the handle.
