How to make a split king bed

Two mattresses, two fitted sheets, one duvet - and a trench down the middle that undoes all of it the first time the base bends. The order to do it in.

By Stephen V.Published How we pick

A split king is made in three layers and the rule is the same every time: the fitted layer is bought in twos, the top layer is bought as a king, and the seam down the middle gets dealt with separately. If you want one product that handles two of those at once, it is the EPHEDORA 3-in-1 - a bed bridge that comes with a fitted sheet designed to go over both mattresses, which is the only item we track that anchors the bridge and the sheets with the same piece of fabric.

The arithmetic, once

Standard US mattress sizes (Better Sleep Council), and what a split king actually is
LayerWhat you buyHow manyWhy
MattressesTwin XL, 38 x 80 in2Together 76 x 80 in - exactly a king footprint
Fitted sheetsTwin XL deep pocket2One per half, so the halves move independently
Mattress protectorsTwin XL2Same reason as the sheets
Flat sheet / duvet / comforterKing1The finished bed is a king, so the top layer is a king
Bed bridge80 in long1 (optional)A twin XL pair is 80 in; many bridges are cut at 75

That bottom row is the one that costs people money. Two standard twins also make a bed 76 inches wide, but only 75 inches long, and a great many bridges sold under the words split king are cut for that pairing. If you bought the mattresses with the base they are almost certainly twin XL; if you pushed two existing twin beds together they probably are not. The full split king arithmetic covers what the configuration costs beyond the base price.

What to look for, before you buy any of it

  1. Pocket depth on the fitted sheets, against your actual stack. Measure the mattress, then add any topper. Twelve inches is a normal mattress today and a 3-inch topper takes you to fifteen, which is past where a standard fitted sheet gives up. The sets we track publish up to 21 inches and 18 to 24 inches.
  2. A published anchoring design, not a thread count. The failure mode on a base is a corner letting go as the mattress bends, and the thing that prevents it is how the sheet grips rather than how fine the weave is. One of the two sets we track publishes a secure-fit design; the other publishes the deepest pocket and nothing about fit security.
  3. Bridge length, before anything else about the bridge. Eighty inches for a twin XL pair. Seventy-five is a real length for a real pairing and it is the wrong one here.
  4. The published maximum gap on the bridge, against your measured trench. Push the halves together, fit the retainer bars, then measure flat and again in the position you actually sleep in. The bridges we track publish maximums from an inch and a half to four inches.
  5. What holds the bridge in the seam. A strap, a buckle or a fitted sheet is a mechanism. Foam shaped to wedge itself in is a claim about a shape, and it needs reseating.

The three things worth buying

1 · Bridge and fitted sheet in one

What works

  • The only entry here that publishes two independent anchoring systems: a fitted sheet over both mattresses and a strap set underneath them
  • A published 4-inch maximum gap, the widest here alongside the 75-inch EPHEDORA
  • The 79-inch elastic sheet is stated to fit either two 75-inch twins or two 80-inch twin XLs, so it is the one entry that does not make you pick a length
  • The sheet is machine washable and the foam lifts out, both published rather than implied
  • It absorbs a purchase you would be making anyway, since a split king needs twin XL fitted sheets regardless

What doesn’t

  • At 7.2 inches the foam bridge itself is the narrowest published here; the ENITYA covers the seam with 12
  • The bridge's own length and thickness are not published anywhere in the listing, so the only dimension you can check against your mattresses is the sheet's 79 inches
  • A single sheet stretched over both halves is doing the opposite of what a split king is for. The listing says the flexible fitted design moves as each side adjusts; we cannot verify how much independent travel it leaves
  • Sixteen-inch pockets are deep but not unlimited — a thick mattress plus a topper can exceed them
  • The most expensive entry on this page

What works

  • Publishes the full 80 inches, which is what a pair of twin XL mattresses on a split king base actually measures
  • A 12-inch top surface — joint widest here with the Selectico — so the seam is covered rather than merely plugged
  • Length, top width and thickness are all published, so you can check it against your own mattresses before ordering rather than after
  • A published 3-inch maximum gap, double the 1.5 inches the Selectico covers

What doesn’t

  • No strap, sheet or buckle published. The T-shaped core is the only thing holding it in the seam, and on a base whose two halves move independently that is the claim we would most want tested
  • Nothing published about the cover: no material, no statement that it comes off, no washing instruction. The Selectico publishes a removable machine-washable cover for less
  • “High density foam” with no density figure is the seller's word for it, not a specification

The EPHEDORA 3-in-1 is the one that suits this page best because it treats the seam and the sheet as one problem: a bridge, a fitted sheet that goes over both mattresses, and a strap set underneath. It publishes a 4-inch maximum gap and 7.2 inches of foam, and its own listing says the fitted design moves as each side adjusts - the nearest any bridge we have read comes to addressing what happens when the halves articulate. What it does not publish is the bridge's own length, which is a real blank on a page about an 80-inch requirement.

The ENITYA 80 x 12 is the plain-foam answer and our pick on the gap-filler roundup: the full 80 inches, a 12-inch top surface and a published 3-inch maximum gap. Nothing holds it in the seam except the shape of the foam, so expect to reseat it - that is the trade for a product you can fit in ten seconds.

The Bedsure set is on this page as the design to look for rather than as the sheet to buy. It publishes a pocket that fits mattresses up to 21 inches and a secure-fit design, which is the pair of specifications that keeps a fitted sheet on a bending mattress. It is a queen set - we track queen sheets, because queen is the size we have read the listings for - so for a split king you want the same two properties in twin XL, bought twice. We would rather tell you that plainly than put a size on the page that does not fit the bed.

The order to actually make the bed in

  1. Flatten both halves and push them together. Everything after this is measured against a bed in its flat position.
  2. Fit the bridge, if you are using one, before any sheet goes on. It sits down in the trench, level with the mattress surface, under whatever goes over the top. The exception is the EPHEDORA 3-in-1, whose own fitted sheet is the anchoring - bridge and sheet go on together.
  3. Protector then fitted sheet, one half at a time. Work the corners on diagonally opposite pairs rather than round the bed; a deep-pocket sheet fights you at the last corner otherwise.
  4. Run each half up and down once, now. This is the step everybody skips. If a corner is going to let go it will let go on the first cycle, and it is much easier to fix before the top layer is on.
  5. Lay the king top layer across both halves. Loose rather than tucked at the foot: a tucked duvet on a base that raises the foot section pulls against the hinge and drags the mattress.
  6. Leave the pillows last and keep them off the seam. Two sets of pillows meeting over a bridge is where the trench shows most, and a king pillow laid across the middle hides it better than two standards butted together.

What a split king will not do, however well it is made

  • Look like a single mattress. There is a seam. A bridge makes it level and invisible under the top layer; it does not make it stop existing, and that is worth knowing before the configuration is chosen rather than after.
  • Share one top sheet comfortably at different angles. If one side is at 45 degrees and the other is flat, one king duvet is being asked to do two shapes. Some couples settle on two twin XL duvets with a king coverlet over the top for appearances.
  • Stay put without the retainer bars. They are the part that stops the mattress creeping as the deck bends, and no bridge compensates for them being in the box.
  • Take a mattress that will not flex. Both halves have to bend. A rigid innerspring or anything with a wood or steel insert is the wrong mattress for a base at all - how to check what you own.

Fitted layer in twos, top layer as a king, and the seam handled before any sheet goes on.

Every specification above was read from a live product listing on the date stamped on its table, and the mattress dimensions are cited to the Better Sleep Council rather than recalled. The rest of the mattresses and bedding section covers the layers above the base in detail. We have not made a bed with any of these products and the sequence above is reasoning about how the parts interact, not a test result. If you are still choosing the base, the six split kings we ranked is where that decision starts - and every one of them will need this bedding or a decision not to bother with the bridge. How we pick.

Questions people actually ask

What sheets do you need for a split king bed?

Two twin XL fitted sheets, one per half, plus one king flat sheet, duvet or comforter over the top. A split king is two twin XL mattresses at 38 by 80 inches each, which together measure 76 by 80 - exactly a king. So the bottom layer is bought in twos and the top layer is bought as a king, and that is the whole rule.

Can you use a king fitted sheet on a split king?

You can, and it defeats the point. A single fitted sheet across both halves ties them together, so when one side raises its head the sheet drags the other mattress with it and lets go at the corners. If the two halves never move independently you may not care; if they do, the fitted layer has to be two separate sheets.

How do you stop the gap in the middle of a split king?

Push both halves fully together, check that the base's own retainer bars are fitted, and then measure the trench with the bed flat before buying anything. If it still bothers you, a bed bridge fills it - and the specification that decides which one is length, because a split king needs 80 inches and a great many bridges sold for the job are 75. The six bridges we compared.

Do fitted sheets come off an adjustable bed?

Routinely, and it is the most common complaint after delivery. A bending mattress stretches a fitted sheet across a curve it was not cut for and the corners let go. The fix is a deep pocket plus a published anchoring design, not a higher thread count - the sheets we would buy are scored on exactly those two things.

What size duvet or comforter for a split king?

King. The finished bed is 76 by 80 inches, the same footprint as a king, so the top layer is bought in king and laid across both halves. The thing to accept is that a single top layer will be pulled off the lower half whenever one side sits up - which is why some couples who run very different angles end up with two twin XL duvets instead, and a king coverlet only for appearances.

How often do you have to re-make a split king?

More often than a single-mattress bed, and the two things that change it are whether the retainer bars are fitted and whether anything anchors the bridge in the seam. A bridge held only by the shape of its foam needs reseating periodically, and more often when the halves move to different angles. That is the trade for a product that takes ten seconds to fit.
