Head to head

New mattress or a topper?

One changes the surface, one changes the support. Three tests tell you which problem you actually have.

By Stephen V.Published How we pick

One costs a fraction of the other. The difference is not quality — it is which layer of the problem they reach. A topper changes the surface. Only a mattress changes the support.

Three tests, five minutes

  1. The straight-edge test. Lay a broom handle, a spirit level or a length of timber across the mattress where you sleep, and look underneath it. A visible gap in the middle means the support has gone. A topper will follow that dip, not fill it.
  2. The edge test. Sit on the edge exactly where you get in and out. If you sink noticeably and the edge rolls away under you, the perimeter support has failed. A topper makes this worse, because it adds a softer layer at the very point you are trying to push up from.
  3. The surface test. Lie on your side. If your hip and shoulder feel like pressure points but the mattress is otherwise flat and supportive, that is a surface problem and a topper is exactly the right answer.

The height row deserves its own paragraph

Both of these are height interventions whether you intend them as one or not. Swapping a 10-inch mattress for a 12-inch adds two inches to the surface. Adding a 3-inch topper adds three. On this site that is not a footnote — it is the number that decides whether someone can stand up from the bed. Measure before and after.

The order we would spend in

  1. Run the three tests. They cost nothing and they usually give a clear answer.
  2. If it is a surface problem, buy a topper — cheap, and reversible. The one we would buy.
  3. If it is a support problem, replace the mattress. A topper on a failed mattress is money spent on postponing the same purchase. The mattresses we track.
  4. Either way, re-measure the height afterwards and re-check any bed rail's gaps, which change the moment the stack does.

Questions people actually ask

Is a mattress topper as good as a new mattress?

For changing how the surface feels, close enough and far cheaper. For restoring support to a mattress that has softened or sagged, no — a topper follows the shape underneath it.

How do I know if my mattress is worn out?

Lay a straight edge across it. A visible dip where you sleep, or an edge that collapses under you when you sit, means the support has gone. Neither is fixable from above.

Can a topper make a bed too high?

Easily. It adds its full thickness to your sleep surface, which for a 3-inch topper is enough to change whether someone can plant their feet on the floor comfortably.

Which is better for an adjustable base?

Either works, as long as the mattress underneath flexes. What matters more is whether the topper slides as the deck bends, which a non-slip backing or a well-anchored sheet solves.

Firmness labels are marketing. Edge support is the specification that decides whether you can get up, and nobody publishes it.
