The best mattress toppers
The cheap way to change how a mattress feels. It also raises the bed by its full thickness, which almost nobody plans for.

A topper is the cheapest way to change how a bed feels, and it is genuinely the right purchase when the mattress is structurally sound but the surface is wrong. It is the wrong purchase when the mattress has failed, and telling those two situations apart is most of this page.

The thing nobody plans for
So: measure before, add the topper, measure after, and check the total against your target. If it has gone too high, the fix is usually lowering the frame or removing a riser rather than giving up the topper.
When a topper is the right answer
- The mattress is firm and flat but feels too hard on hips and shoulders.
- You want to test whether a softer surface helps before committing to a new mattress.
- The bed is used occasionally — a guest room, a temporary arrangement.
- You need a couple of inches of height and would rather have them as comfort than as risers.
When it is not
- The mattress sags where you sleep. A topper follows the dip. You are adding softness on top of a hollow, and the hollow is the problem — when to replace instead.
- The edge collapses when you sit. A topper makes the edge softer, not firmer, so it makes this worse. Edge support.
- The bed is already at or above your target height. Adding three inches to a bed that is already too high is the wrong direction.
The picks

Best Price Mattress 3 Inch Ventilated Memory Foam Topper

Three inches, CertiPUR-US, ventilated — and worth remembering that a topper raises the bed by its full thickness.
- Thickness
- 3 in
- Our spec score
- 7.8/10
- Best for
- Softening what you own
What works
- A cheap way to change how a mattress feels without replacing it
- Ventilated foam and CertiPUR-US both published
- Adds a published 3 inches, which is a real and often useful height gain
What doesn’t
- It adds 3 inches to your sheet depth too — check your fitted sheets before you order
- A topper cannot fix a mattress that has bottomed out; it only changes the top surface
- No published cover, so plan on a protector

EGOHOME 12 Inch Queen Memory Foam Mattress

12 inches of all-foam, medium firm and CertiPUR-US certified — the ordinary, correct answer for most adjustable bases.
- Height
- 12 in
- Our spec score
- 8.3/10
- Best for
- Most adjustable bases
As of July 23, 2026. #ad How we’re funded
What works
- All-foam construction flexes over an adjustable base, which a traditional innerspring often will not
- A published 12-inch height — the number you add to your base height to work out where the top of the bed lands
- CertiPUR-US certified and the dimensions are published to the inch
What doesn’t
- The listing does not explicitly state adjustable-base compatibility, so confirm with the seller if the base is the whole point
- Medium firm is a manufacturer's word, not a measurement — expect to disagree with it
- 12 inches is a lot of mattress. On a tall base it can put the sleep surface higher than you want

The mattress is on this page deliberately. If the topper cannot fix your problem, that is the alternative, and putting it here rather than making you go and find it seemed like the more honest arrangement.
Small practical points
- Buy deeper sheets at the same time. Otherwise the first night ends with a corner off.
- Give foam a few days to air. New foam has a smell, and it fades.
- Check it does not slide on an adjustable base as the deck bends. A non-slip backing or a well-anchored sheet is the fix.
- Re-check any bed rail's gaps. A topper changes the rail-to-mattress relationship entirely — the measurements.
Questions people actually ask
Does a mattress topper change the height of the bed?
Yes, by its full thickness. A 3-inch topper puts your sleep surface 3 inches higher, which is often enough to turn a bed you could get out of into one you cannot. Re-measure afterwards.
Will a topper fix a sagging mattress?
No. A topper changes the top surface; it does not restore support underneath. If the mattress dips where you sleep, you are climbing out of a hollow and a topper adds a softer layer over the same hollow.
Do I need deeper sheets with a topper?
Almost always. Add the topper thickness to your mattress thickness and add two inches for the tuck. The sizing table.
Does a topper work on an adjustable bed?
A foam topper flexes with the mattress beneath it. The thing to watch is that it can slide independently as the bed bends, which drags the sheet with it — a topper with a non-slip backing or a secured sheet solves that.
