The best mattress for side sleepers
Start with the Zinus 12-inch: it is the only mattress we track whose listing states adjustable-base compatibility outright, and a side sleeper on a base needs that line in writing.

We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we recommend, and we have not tested these products — here is what we do instead.
If you sleep on your side and you are shopping the mattresses we track, start with the Zinus 12 Inch Green Tea queen. It is the only mattress on this site whose listing states adjustable-base compatibility outright instead of leaving you to infer it from the fact that foam bends, and it publishes more than the others around it: two certifications rather than one, a 500 lb queen weight limit, a 10-year limited warranty, and a named flame barrier in place of fiberglass. For a side sleeper on an adjustable base, that compatibility line is the single most useful sentence on any of these listings.
That is the verdict. The rest of this page is about the specification that would actually settle a side-sleeper purchase, and the fact that not one listing in this category publishes it.
Why side sleeping is a firmness question
On your back, your weight spreads across your whole back surface. On your side, it concentrates on two bony points — the shoulder and the hip — with the waist suspended between them. A surface that is too firm holds those two points up and leaves the spine bent sideways at both ends. A surface that is too soft lets them sink until the waist is unsupported and the spine bends the other way. The range that works is narrow, and it is narrower for an older side sleeper, because less muscle and thinner tissue over the hip make that joint less forgiving of a hard surface.
How we ranked them for a side sleeper
The same four-criterion rubric as every mattress on this site, published in full on our methodology page, reordered for this one question:
- Whether the listing states adjustable-base compatibility. Side sleepers benefit most from a slight head and knee raise, and a mattress that creases at the hinge rather than flexing puts a ridge under exactly the shoulder you were trying to unload. One listing of the three says this outright.
- Construction, layer by layer. A single undifferentiated foam slab and a three-layer build behave differently at the shoulder. Two of the three publish what is inside them.
- Certification. CertiPUR-US on the foam, and — separately — whether the listing says anything about fiberglass in the fire barrier and what replaces it. One listing names the replacement rather than implying it.
- Height, published to the inch. A side sleeper needs enough depth that the shoulder does not reach the hard deck. All three publish 12 inches, so this criterion does not separate them; it matters for the stack arithmetic instead.

What each listing publishes
| Mattress | Height | Firmness as published | Base compatibility stated | Certifications |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zinus 12 Inch Green Tea | 12 in | Medium feel, no scale | Yes, in writing | CertiPUR-US foam and an OEKO-TEX cover |
| EGOHOME 12 Inch | 12 in | Medium firm, no scale | Not stated | CertiPUR-US |
| Yaheetech 12 Inch 3-layer | 12 in | Medium firm, no scale | Not stated | CertiPUR-US and a no-fiberglass statement |
| Best Price Mattress 3 in topper | 3 in, added to the stack | Not published | Flexes with the base beneath it | CertiPUR-US |
Two things come out of that table. The first is that this category is more uniform than its marketing suggests: three 12-inch all-foam queens, all certified, all described with a medium-something adjective. The second is that the only differences a side sleeper can act on are the compatibility statement, the layer count and what each listing says about fiberglass — and all three of those are statements about documentation rather than about feel. That is the honest shape of this decision, and anybody ranking these three on how they feel has not slept on them either.

1 · Best for a side sleeper on a base
Zinus 12 Inch Green Tea Essential Memory Foam Mattress, Queen

The only mattress here whose listing states adjustable-base compatibility outright rather than leaving you to infer it from the foam, and it names the fire barrier that replaces the fiberglass.

As of October 10, 2026. #ad How we’re funded
What works
- The listing states adjustable-base compatibility in writing — the one line every other mattress on this site leaves you to infer from the fact that foam bends
- Fiberglass-free is published and, unusually, so is what replaces it: a carbon-rayon flame barrier, named rather than implied. Fiberglass in a fire barrier is only a problem if the cover comes off, and covers do come off
- Two certifications rather than one — CertiPUR-US on the foam and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 on the cover — plus a published 10-year warranty and a 500 lb queen weight limit
What doesn’t
- Medium feel is a manufacturer's word, not a measurement — expect to disagree with it
- This is the Essential build, so there is no cooling-gel claim on it. If sleeping hot is your complaint, that is the wrong variant and possibly the wrong construction
- 12 inches is a lot of mattress. On a tall base it can put the sleep surface higher than you want

2 · Simplest all-foam answer
EGOHOME 12 Inch Queen Memory Foam Mattress

What works
- All-foam construction flexes over an adjustable base, which a traditional innerspring often will not
- A published 12-inch height — the number you add to your base height to work out where the top of the bed lands
- CertiPUR-US certified and the dimensions are published to the inch
What doesn’t
- The listing does not explicitly state adjustable-base compatibility, so confirm with the seller if the base is the whole point
- Medium firm is a manufacturer's word, not a measurement — expect to disagree with it
- 12 inches is a lot of mattress. On a tall base it can put the sleep surface higher than you want

What works
- A cheap way to change how a mattress feels without replacing it
- Ventilated foam and CertiPUR-US both published
- Adds a published 3 inches, which is a real and often useful height gain
What doesn’t
- It adds 3 inches to your sheet depth too — check your fitted sheets before you order
- A topper cannot fix a mattress that has bottomed out; it only changes the top surface
- No published cover, so plan on a protector

Two of these have a review of their own: the Zinus 12 Inch Green Tea, the one with the compatibility line, and the EGOHOME 12 Inch.
Why the topper is on this page
Most people who arrive searching for a side-sleeper mattress already own one, and the complaint is usually that it is too firm at the shoulder rather than that it has collapsed. A 3-inch topper is the direct answer to that complaint at a fraction of the cost, and the one we track publishes both its thickness and its certification. Two caveats, both arithmetic: it raises the sleep surface by its full published 3 inches, which matters if the bed is already hard to get out of, and it raises your sheet depth by the same amount. What a topper does to the height of the bed, and the deep-pocket sheets that still fit afterwards.
Side sleeping on an adjustable base
A side sleeper gets less out of a big head raise than a reflux or breathing patient does, and more out of a small one combined with a slight knee lift. The head raise stops the top shoulder rolling across the chest; the knee lift stops the top leg dragging the pelvis forward. Both are small movements, which is useful, because small movements are where a cheap base and an expensive one behave identically. What matters is that the mattress flexes at those hinge lines rather than creasing, and that is a property of the foam, not of the motor. How the bases we track actually move.
If you share the bed and only one of you sleeps on their side, that is the argument for two independent halves rather than one surface, and it is the cheapest way to stop a compromise mattress being bought for two different bodies: split king, compared properly.

Before you order
- Check the return window and write the date down. It is the only firmness measurement available to you, and it runs from delivery rather than from the night you decide.
- Add the numbers up. Frame or base height, plus 12 inches of mattress, plus any topper. That sum is where the top of the bed will be, and it decides how easy getting up will be for years.
- If it is going on an adjustable base, look for the compatibility line. One of these three states it; the other two leave you to infer it. If the base is the whole point, ask the seller in writing rather than assuming.
- Check your sheets. A 12-inch mattress plus a 3-inch topper needs a deep-pocket fitted sheet, and an ordinary one will pop off a corner every time the base folds.
Everything above is either a figure read from a live product listing on the date stamped in its own specification table, or a plain statement that the listing publishes nothing. We have not slept on any of these mattresses and we do not claim to have measured one. The reasoning about shoulder and hip loading is reasoning about geometry, flagged as reasoning, and nothing on this page is medical advice. How we pick, and what we refuse to claim.
Questions people actually ask
What is the best mattress for a senior who sleeps on their side?
Of the mattresses we track, the Zinus 12 Inch Green Tea queen is where we would start, because it is the only one whose listing states in writing that it works on an adjustable base, and it publishes two certifications, a 500 lb queen weight limit and a 10-year limited warranty alongside. It is an all-foam medium feel, which is the construction a side sleeper usually wants. What no listing here gives you is a measured firmness, so the final judgment is yours and it is made on your own shoulder.
Should a side sleeper buy a soft or a firm mattress?
Side sleeping concentrates your weight on two bony points, the shoulder and the hip, so the surface has to let those two sink while still supporting the waist. That is usually described as medium or medium-soft. The problem is that none of the three mattresses we track publishes a measured firmness figure of any kind — all three publish a word, either medium or medium firm, chosen by the seller, with no scale behind it. Treat the word as a hint and the return window as the real specification.
Does a side sleeper need a thicker mattress?
Not thicker, but deep enough that the shoulder does not reach the hard deck underneath. All three mattresses we track are 12 inches, which is comfortably enough for that. The more useful question for a senior is what 12 inches does to the height of the bed, because the mattress sits on top of whatever the base or frame already stands at. Work the stack out before you order.
Can a side sleeper use an adjustable bed?
Yes, and a slight head and knee raise suits side sleeping better than most people expect — it stops the top shoulder rolling forward and takes some drag off the lower back. The constraint is the mattress, not the position: it has to flex at the hinge lines without creasing, which is why all-foam is the safe construction and a traditional innerspring usually is not. Base compatibility, in detail.
Is a topper enough, or do I need a new mattress?
If the mattress you own is supportive but too firm at the shoulder, a topper is the cheaper and faster fix, and the 3-inch topper we track publishes both its thickness and a CertiPUR-US certification. If the mattress has bottomed out — if you can feel a trough where you lie — a topper only follows the trough down. The full comparison.
What about shoulder and hip pain specifically?
A mattress changes how much load those joints take overnight; it does not treat the joint. If one shoulder or one hip hurts in a way that is getting worse, that is a question for a clinician rather than for a product page. What we can tell you is what each listing publishes, which is what the table on this page does. Hip and shoulder pain and bed position.
