The best beds for hip pain
A painful hip is a pressure problem at night and a twisting problem in the morning. Different products solve each, and most buyers only hear about one.

The verdict first. If the hip hurts both lying down and getting up, the Amada 01B-Q1 queen is the single purchase that addresses both: it publishes four leg heights as actual inches - 8, 10, 11 and 13 - so you can set the bed to a height you can stand up from, and a zero-gravity preset that lifts the knees to take tension off the hip without you building a pillow arrangement. If the problem is purely pressure at night, buy the EGOHOME 12-inch all-foam mattress instead and keep your frame. And the budget pick is a set of risers at under twenty dollars - the cheapest thing on this page, and the right first purchase if the hip only hurts when you stand up.
Hip pain in bed is two different problems and almost every page about it treats them as one. The first is pressure. Lying on your side, the hip is one of two points taking most of your weight, and on a mattress that will not let it sink the load concentrates. The second is the transfer. Getting out of bed with a painful hip means rotating it, and rotating it is the movement that hurts. A softer mattress helps the first problem and makes the second one worse, which is why buying only on firmness advice so often disappoints people.
Which product solves which problem
| Pick | Pressure at night | Getting out of bed | What it publishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amada 01B-Q1 base | Indirectly - knees up takes hip tension off | Yes - head lift and four leg heights | 8, 10, 11, 13 in legs; 750 lb; zero gravity |
| EGOHOME 12-inch | Yes - all memory foam, medium firm | No - foam is harder to push off | 12 in, all memory foam, CertiPUR-US |
| 3-inch topper | Yes - softens a firm mattress for a fifth of the price | No | 3 in, ventilated gel memory foam, CertiPUR-US |
| LESAMEDiiO rail | No | Yes - lets you sit up square instead of rolling | 400 lb, ASTM F3186-17, motion light |
| Home-it risers | No | Yes - sets the height standing up needs | 3, 5 or 8 in lift, 1,300 lb, pack of 4 |
Notice that nothing in the first column also wins the second. Softer surfaces reduce pressure and make the push-off harder; firmer surfaces do the reverse. That trade is real and it is why the top pick is the base - it is the only item here that improves both columns at once, and it is also the dearest.
How we ranked these five
Each product is scored against the published rubric for its own category - a base against bases, a mattress against mattresses - so the ledger numbers are not comparing foam to a motor. The order is ours, and it is the order we would spend in: the thing that fixes both problems, then the pressure fixes, then the transfer fixes, cheapest last because the cheapest is also where a lot of readers should start. If the problem is pressure at night
Two purchases, one of which costs a fifth of the other. The topper is the experiment. Three inches of ventilated gel memory foam on top of a firm mattress changes the surface the hip rests on, costs about a fifth of the cheapest mattress here, and comes off again if it does not help. If your mattress is firm and otherwise sound, start here.
The mattress is the fix, if the mattress is the problem. The EGOHOME is all memory foam at a published medium-firm, 12 inches thick, CertiPUR-US certified - which is a certification about what is not in the foam, not about how it performs. What no mattress listing in this category publishes is a pressure map, a firmness figure on any scale, or a weight limit beyond one exception we track. So the honest process is: read the published return window, buy within it, and give it three weeks. The mattresses we track for seniors, and foam versus hybrid.
If the problem is getting out of bed
The advice people are given after hip surgery is also the right advice for a hip that simply hurts: keep the knees apart, do not rotate the leg inward, do not bend the hip much past a right angle. Every one of those is broken by the standard improvisation - rolling onto the painful side and pushing up off the elbow.
What lets somebody avoid all three is a handhold in front of them and a bed at the right height. The rail gives a 400 lb-rated grip to pull against so the body comes up square instead of rolling, and its motion-sensor light removes the other half of the night-time problem. The risers change the measurement that decides whether standing up is a step or a squat, and at under twenty dollars for a pack of four with a published 1,300 lb rating they are the cheapest useful thing on this page. Bed height after hip replacement, and the risers and legs under $50.

What we would not buy for hip pain
A very soft mattress, if getting up is any part of the problem. It is the most common advice given for hip pain and it is half the story - the half that makes the morning worse.
A leg wedge, for most readers here. It is excellent for swelling and it is one more object to move before you can swing your legs out, which is the opposite of what a painful hip needs. The leg wedges, and who they are for.
A full-length guard rail. If the aim is a handhold, an assist rail or a handle is the right product; a full-length rail meant to stop somebody rolling out carries an entrapment risk and is a different decision entirely. Who should not use a bed rail.
Every specification on this page was read from a live Amazon listing on the date stamped in each product's own table, and scored against the rubric for its own category. We have not slept on any of these and we make no claim about how they feel. The movement cautions - knees apart, no inward rotation, no deep hip flexion - follow the AAOS patient materials named above rather than our opinion, and none of this page is a substitute for the advice of the clinician who knows your hip. How we pick.
Questions people actually ask
What kind of bed is best for hip pain?
There are two separate problems and the answer depends on which one you have. If the hip hurts while you lie still, the mattress is doing it - too firm, and the hip and shoulder cannot sink in enough to keep the spine level. If the hip hurts when you get up, the bed height and the twist are doing it, and a softer mattress makes that worse rather than better. Work out which one you have before you spend anything: it decides whether you buy foam or you buy height.
Should a bed be firm or soft for hip pain?
Medium is where most of this category sits and there is a reason. A mattress too firm leaves the hip taking the load on a small area; a mattress too soft lets the hip sink until the spine is out of line and getting up becomes a climb. Both of the mattresses on this page publish a medium or medium-firm feel. We have not slept on either and we score what they publish, not how they feel - which is why the honest advice is to use the return window rather than our opinion.
Does an adjustable bed help hip pain?
It can, in two ways that are worth separating. Raising the knees slightly takes tension off the hip flexors and off the lower back, which is the position a lot of people find themselves improvising with pillows anyway - a base does it properly and holds it. And raising the head helps you get from flat to sitting without rolling onto the painful side. What it does not do is change the surface pressure under the hip; that is the mattress. What the elevation angles do, and hip and shoulder pain positions.
How do you get out of bed with a painful hip?
Without twisting, which is the whole trick. The standard advice after hip surgery is to keep the knees apart, avoid rotating the leg inward and avoid bending the hip past a right angle - and the usual improvisation, rolling onto the bad side to push up, breaks all three. Something fixed to pull against lets you sit up square instead. Bed height after hip replacement covers the measurements, and helping someone out of bed covers the technique.
Is a mattress topper enough, or do I need a new mattress?
If the mattress is firm and otherwise sound, a topper is the cheaper experiment and it is the one we would run first - about a fifth of the price of the cheapest mattress here, and reversible. If the mattress sags in the middle, a topper makes the sag softer rather than flatter and you are buying the wrong thing. Mattress versus topper.
What height should the bed be with a bad hip?
High enough that standing up does not mean rising from a squat, and not so high that the feet dangle. The working rule on this site is feet flat on the floor with the knees level with or just below the hips, which for most people puts the top of the mattress somewhere in the low twenties of inches - and that is a measurement you take rather than a number you trust. How to measure it, and the calculator.
